BEIJING - An obese 26-year-old man in northeastern China died after a "marathon" online gaming session over the Lunar New Year holiday, state media said on Wednesday.

The 330-pound man from Jinzhou, in Liaoning province, collapsed on Saturday, the last day of the holiday, after spending "almost all" of the seven-day break playing online games, the China Daily said, citing his parents.

Xu Yan, a local teacher, said the "dull life" during the holiday prompted many people to turn to computer games for entertainment.

"There are only two options. TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?" the paper quoted Xu as saying.

China has seen an alarming rise in the number of teenage and young adult Internet addicts in recent years, despite attempts to restrict minors from cybercafes and limit online game playing times.

About 2.6 million -- or 13 percent -- of China's 20 million Internet users under 18 are classed as addicts, state media have reported.

An obese young man from Northeast China's Liaoning Province has died after a marathon video games session.

The 26-year-old man, surnamed Zhang from Jinzhou, collapsed on February 24, the last day of the week-long Spring Festival holiday, after hours of non-stop online gaming.

A doctor from the Liaoning Medical College blamed "overwork and obesity" as the cause of Zhang's death.

An Internet addict, Zhang spent almost all his time playing online games during the seven-day holiday instead of sleeping and visiting relatives, his parents said.

Moreover, he weighed almost 150 kilograms, and his heart struggled to pump blood throughout his enormous body.

Zhang's story has shocked the local community.

"I am a little scared after reading the story of Zhang, because I did almost the same thing like him," said Wang Rui, a young photographer from an advertising company in Shenyang.

"I also played games for such a long time that I could hardly find time to sleep during the holiday.

"Now, I just can't drag my mind back to normal and feel rather tired."

Meng Xianyun, a doctor from China Medical University, said symptoms such as tiredness and the inability to concentrate properly were caused by "irregular lifestyle" excessive food and drinking and a lack of exercise during the holiday period.

"That's all fine for the festival, but do not ignore your health, especially those old and young people," Meng said.

Xu Yan, a female middle school teacher complained the "dull life" during the festival prompted many people to turn to computer games for entertainment.

"There are only two options: TV or computer. What else can I do in the holiday as all markets, KTV and cafeterias are shut down?" Xu said.

Liu Jie, an expert from local Shenyang Cultural and History Research Institute, urged the local government organize more "traditional activities" to entertain people during the festival.

that's unfortunate.... i always wonder what kills these people. The truth is that people do just randomly die sometimes, and I doubt gamers are THAT much more likely to go down than anyone else. (Note the NFL player who passed this week).

I could have sworn I just read a story that said they had shock treatment or something for people who used the internet too much.

I wonder why they mentioned his weight... It didn't appear to have anything to do with the story.

I was waiting for the tie-in, but it didn't materialize.

Just curious...that is all.

Edit:

I responded before the 2nd story was added... makes a little more sense now.

The big risk of staying stationary for long stretches are embolisms brought on by blood clots in the leg. The clots migrate to the lungs where it blocks the absorption of oxygen. It's often called deep vein thromboses. I think it may be the second leading cause of non accident related sudden death in the US behind heart attacks or something.
