So my Refurb HT-SR600 system arrived today. Got it all set up and after about a minute of being on at a low-moderate volume I hear a snap-fizzle noise come from the receiver. And then it starts to smoke.

Now we find out whether Onkyo have good customer service or bad. If I have to pay for return shipping on this I will not be happy.

***Update

Called their toll free line again this morning, and finally got a real person. First thing they asked was could I please hold. "Sigh, here we go again." But nope, after maybe a minute she was back and able to help. I explained my situation, she apologized and then told me she was sending me a FedEx slip to put on my box, then to drop it off and that they'd send me out another unit.

Hopefully this next one isn't a dud. If it is, I'll just be returning it and getting my moneys back.

Unfortunately I've read bad things about shoponkyo's service if that's where you got it from

Unbelievable. Can't reach them by phone and their web-based customer support system times out.

Their support is absolutely useless. It took my friend 3 days to get in touch with a rep just so he could correct his credit card info.

Sorry to hear. I only post this to help others. NEVER buy refurb amplifiers or receivers. Once something breaks on them they're pretty much done especially if it's amp related. It damages everything.

You may want to check all of your cabling because you may fry your next piece of gear. No stray strands of speaker cable anywhere, especially near the chassis, etc.

I have never had any luck with damaged receivers customer service wise from onkyo, hk, denon, et all.

Just use their search tool to find a local authorized repair shop that will fix it under warranty. Their refurb stuff carries a 1 year warranty so it shouldn't be a problem. I agree getting ahold of anyone at shoponkyo is difficult to impossible, but I had a refurb receiver break on me literally 2 days before teh 1 year warranty was up, and I took it to a local repair shop and they had it back to me a few days later.

Good idea, they've got a service center 50 miles away from me in Denver so I guess I'll head down there this weekend and drop it off. If they can't fix it or it breaks again I'll have them send it back to Onkyo for me.

I have an Onkyo 503 in the computer room and a 705 in the living room.
No problems so far, but I agree with the ones that say that refurb receivers are not a wise buy. Flip a coin more or less.

I hope they take care of ya'! Please post an update on the situation when you can.
