** resolved **

I moved and didn't have this onkyo tx-sr600 connected for over a year. It worked great before.

Sound is all working in every channel/speaker but not the sub. The cable connects on both ends (sub pre out on the receiver, and the only plug on the sub itself). It's plugged in to power and shows a green light on the back... although before it went to orange standby after a short period, but right now it's green. The dial on the back of the sub is at max but it's making 0 noise. I can tell it still works because if I only partially plug the audio cable in it makes a loud bass-filled hum.

The receiver is set to subwoofer = yes, and aside from that the troubleshooting guide just says to check the dial which i did. It's not working for any devices... The roku, a DVD player, and a fios set top box.

this probably won't help but i will give you a similar experience i recently had.

i moved early september, and i hadn't used my 5.1 in over 5.5 years. my sub was literally sitting in my closet the whole time since it was in an apartment.

when i hooked up my 5.1 at my new house, the speakres were working but the sub was acting weird. it wasn't working and was making odd noises.

after a little while (maybe 10 minutes or so) it started working out of nowhere ,and has been working since.

although now it will make a weird 'humming' noise sometimes when it's not in use during a movie, which is annoying as hell, and the 'humming' noise is the sub getting signal/not getting signal real quick, back and forth. i can tell this is happening because the light keeps flickering red/green really fast, and the 'humming' is the popping noise it makes when it turns green each time. it is really annoying.

Try connecting the sub a little different. If your dvd player has a LFE/sub out, connect directly to that (don't go through your receiver). You could also connect directly from your fios set top box (just use one of the left/right outputs). If you still do not hear anything, then you at least know it is the sub, but if you do, then you know it is your receiver (or settings in the receiver).

Turns out it was the audio cable... Think it's the first time a cable of any type has actually failed for me. Otherwise I would've checked it first. Now I will check them first.
