Onkyo SR875, should I get for $750?

I seen a Onkyo SR875 on ebay for $699 plus $50 for shipping. Is that a good deal or should I just wait for prices on the SR876 to come down? or is there really no benefit to get the 876?

This will be a huge upgrade for me, I have a old Onkyo 7.1 component surround sound system. I will have to buy or build some speakers, I have the subwoofer already setup.

The SR600 line is supposed to be excellent. Unless you want to spend big bucks on speakers, I wouldn't bother.

If you want to DIY some speakers, I could give you a killer deal on some 5.25" Peerless midwoofers and Vifa D27TG tweeters....

well if I am building my own speakers, I would probably go with the new ScanSpeak illuminator line. I run a 3-way peerless in my vehicle.

That's a lot of cash for a HT setup! You're looking at a minimum of maybe $2,500 in speaker drivers alone! If you're spending this sort of cash, I'd go much further up-market - I hear Outlaw Audio makes great HT stuff.

Although the Illuminator woofers have a lot more excursion, the Revelator woofers measure just as well if the excursion is limited by low output power or a lack of low frequency output, none of which you really need if you have a sub. The large-format Revelator tweeters measure as well if not better than the small-format Illuminator tweeters.

Also, a word of advice - build someone else's design. ScanSpeak stuff is generally considered quite tricky to work with, and you won't get your money's worth unless the crossover is spot-on. A good design is John Krutke's ZDT - just build the 2-way version of the cabinet and consider losing the port if your subwoofer can play up to 70hz.

well my ideal situation would be running the center and fronts active and then going with cheaper speakers for the rest of the system. The bulk of money will go into the front stage, not much worried about rears and surrounds. I am not going to be buying new and this will be a looong time to build, probably a good year or so to get together enough funds, I will be looking for used/like new drivers as time goes on. I just saw this unit and thought it was a really good price, if its not that great of a price I will pass on it.
