It is factory reconditioned. I still think it's a good deal, but just so everyone knows.
Onkyo is making some great stuff.

1 year probably - that's what they give their receivers and speakers in their refurb store. I'll have to add this one under consideration.

Is this thing any good or am I better off just buying a new progressive scan unit, since the prices seem pretty low?

Umm - it's just probably brand name over anything else. That Panasonic has a much better video DAC than the Onkyo that you're comparing it to.

I got a refurb DVCP500 (5 disc changer) for $100 from OneCall.com a couple of months ago. First one was DOA the 2nd one works great. Everything I read said it didn't play DVD-R's but I found that it does depending on what you used to burn the DVD. When I used DVDXCopy or InstantCopy, no go. But if I would rip, DVD2One, and Nero it it would work fine.

It's a nice player, matches all my other Onkyo stuff, but the DVD-R compatibility is sketchy... the discs I made with DVDXCopy didn't work in it, but would work fine in my friend's cheapo Apex or Go-Video players.

How good is the mp3 playing quality of this DVD changer?

Can it:
* play mp3's randomly?
* display ID3 tags?
* support folders?
* play CDRW disks?

Not to worry: those Apex / Go-Video players have much worse negatives in the form of QC issues.
