I am new to this site. I have bought onkyo ht r 390 and lg bluray player. I have connected my bd via hdmi to onkyo and a hdmi from onkyo to led. I am having a optical audio option from bd but not used it. I am getting only 2.1 output ie sound in all speakers. Can I connect optical from bd to onkyo. Hdmi from bd to led and hdmi from onkyo to led to get good sound effects and picture. Kindly guide me.

Kindly explain this statement, how do you know you are getting only 2.1? the center channel and the back/surround speakers are silent? no sound at all? or its simulated sound, ie, you feel like you are getting stereo only?

Did you try all the settings in the BD player and AVR? also, the video you are playing, did you make sure that you choose the 5.1 digital sound and not AC3 stereo sound track? Does the video even have 5.1?

If its a stereo, 2 channel video then you AVR can easily simulate a 5.1 sound, just cycle through the presets.

Make sure you go through the audio settings on your new bluray player and make sure nothing is set to "Downmix". This is the default for most players and will keep digital audio bitstreaming from working correctly.

What others have said. It's your settings not your connection.

HDMI has better audio bandwidth than optical. There's absolutely no reason to ever go optical if you can go HDMI.
