Having grown tired of my 4 banger Grand AM and remembering the days when I had my 305 86' Camaro 5spd I decided to look for an F-body. I was browsing autotrader today and noticed this great deal (scroll down) that sent shivers down my spine. It's a 1994 Z28 6spd with a Lingenfelter LT1. If you're unfamiliar with that name then most likely you?re not big into autos. Lingenfelter is the elite among GM engines and performance mods. I remember reading a few years back in, I believe, Car & Driver who did performance tests on this engine in a F-Body. 0 to 60 in a tad above 4, the quarter in 12, and the top out at 190MPH.

While the miles for this car are 92,000, that doesn't mention how much of that included the Lingenfelter. Either way, just owning an F-Body with a Lingenfelter LT1 engine that retails alone for $14,000 US is hard to pass up. I live in Grand Rapids, MI, which is about 3 hours away from Decatur, IN. One kind of cool fact is that Lingenfelter is also based in Decatur, IN near this auto dealership. I'm thinking of taking a look at the car next weekend.

If I decide to get this, It would be my occasional drive since I'm keeping my Grand AM for the Michigan winters. What?s everyone?s opinion on this car? Too much power ;) ? Bad deal? Take a look and go for it?

Too much power? No such thing, my friend. You'll want to have a mechanic check it out thoroughly, of course. Any modded sports car with that many miles on it has likely seen all manner of abuse. You gotta think about the speeding tickets you'll inevitably get, too. Might want to look into getting legal insurance. It'll work differently in different places, but I was quoted $17 a month for 50 hours of legal counsel per month. If you get a speeding ticket, you can have a lawyer go to court and try to get it thrown out. Might be worth looking into if you're gonna own a car like that. Awesome car though.

There's a lot of things that aren't mentioned there. The most important being the number of miles on the 383 c.i. Lingenfelter alone. I'll give them a call sometime next week and gather more information. If anyone else can come up with good questions I'll make sure to mention them.

I remember when he first became big with an article in car craft called "Please mister postman, mail me an engine" He owned a junkyard and engine shop. Now, I lust for one of his long blocks just like most do.

I bought a custom motor from Lingenfelter in 1986. I used a LS7 454 long block for a core and had a 496" rat motor built. The displacement was achieved with a 1/4" stroke crank kit and custom aluminum rods. This baby dyno'd 513hp on pump gas! The compression ratio was 9.3:1 using a comp cams 580h, Rhoads lifters, and a dual plane intake with a single 780 Holley. I know things have changed since then, nobody today knows what a Rhoads lifter is or what a big block is like, but this motor has outlasted 2 vehicles and has 84,000 miles on the clock and has never been touched. This motor idles like a stone stocker and will cruise all day long in August heat. There is no excuse for cubic inches! Not to mention, this motor looks right at home in my Marina Blue, 1970 Chevelle SS.

Going to higher octane will let you run a higher compression, but you probably know that already.

10:1 is just about right nowadays. Much more is a pain.

Looks like a great car. Lingenfelter is one of the top chevy guys out there so I would say it's a great deal if it hasn't been abused to much. And even if it has.. :)

The 383 is a great motor , lots of torque as well as HP.

Wrong.

You know you have too much horsepower when:

1. The emissions test guy starts laughing as soon as you pull onto the rollers.

2. You can't drive your car in the rain.

3. Your 'significant other' is afraid to drive your car.

4. You are afraid to drive your car.

5. You spend more on tires than on food.

6. You spend more on car insurance than on house payments.

7. You look in a state police car and see a picture of your car taped to the dash.

8. You throw your underwear in the garbage rather than the hamper.

9. You have to go to the track to buy gas.

10. Your mechanic names the new wing of his shop after you.

11. Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher wave you by.

12. You can make the Kessel Run in less than 12 parsecs.

13. You're tempted to wear your fire suit just to drive to the office.

14. Red signal lights shift to green as you're approaching then shift back to red as you're receding.

15. You arrive somewhere before you left.

16. You get pulled over for doing 155 in a 35 but the cops will let you go if "they can look under thehood."

17. You remove the $2000 stereo system to save 6 lb. of weight.

18. You are not allowed to run in the Silver State Challenge.

19. You get an anonymous phone call asking if you are interested in being in the Cannonball Run.

20. Your face looks like you are riding a NASA centrifuge when you drive the car.

22. You need parachute braking.

23. 'significant other' won't even ride in the car.

24 There is no possible way to "sneak out" of your neighborhood at 6 am.

25. Your pets scramble for their hiding spots as soon as the garage door is opened. (Pets, and all the neighbors...)

26. Family photos throughout the house are replaced with life-sized posters of your car.

27. Fuel is delivered to your home: in 55 gallon drums!

28. You carry earplugs in your car.(doesn't everybody???)

29. The only spot on the car which receives any regular cleaning is the windshield. (what else is there to clean???)

30. You find out that side mirrors don't hold up at speeds exceeding 145 mph.

I just wanted to update this thread. I didn't go with this 94 Camaro with the Lingenfelter. It was sold only three days after posting this. What I did go with is, in my opinion, much better. It's a 1999 Camaro SS. I found it online at a certified dealer 30 miles from where I live in Grand Rapids. I got a pretty good deal on this one as well. $15,795 with dealer warranty too. Options include chrome 17" ZR1 SS rims, high flow exhaust, cold air intake hood, SLP differential, SLP rear spoiler, charcoal leather interior with power everything, Monsoon 8 speaker stereo, ASR traction control, 6 speed manual with Hurst shifter, and most importantly the 320HP helped by the 8 cylinder 5.7 liter LS1. Normally Camaro SSs of this year go for around $22K to $25K. I did a bit of dealing on the car due to it having almost 70K miles on it. The engine is totally clean and well kept by the previous owner. The dealer even put new Kumo 275/40ZR17 street/racing tires on it for me, which are about $160, a piece. This beast has great "throw you in the back of your seat" torque making it fun to drive. Using the 6-speed manual was like riding a bike again. The last time I used a manual with my 5 speed 86 Camaro. I love the sound of the engine and never get tired of it. I can even hear the engine in my sleep. You can see a picture of it in my sig. That was just a quick picture I took with a Polaroid camera and then scanned. I'll take better pics when I can borrow my friend?s high res digital camera.

Nice car, my wife just bought a '02 Z28 as a daily driver.

If I'm nice to her she lets me drive it ;)
