One Way Cable

Hi there,
Our house is supposed to have one way cable installed tomrrow afternoon. This cable is supposed to ahve 600kbs DL speed but only 33.6kbs upload. Unfortunatly DSL/2-way cable are unavailable. We are currently running a dialup connection, thus limiting how many computers can be connected at once. We had planned on getting 1-way cable and networking 4 computers. The more I think about it , it seems to be a bad idea. Is it worth it to network 1-way cable? Or will the upload suffer when multiple computers are being used. At least 2 of these computers will be used for online gaming at a time. Need help asap so I can cancel the isntallation if needed. Thanks a lot

Im perfectly fine with no benefit for gaming...the thing that worries me is it going to be worse? I have a bad feeling that multiple computers sharing a dial-up upload is going to be a bad experiece...even worse than single dialup connection not shared.

shadow82, one way really really sucks. Beyond the obvious ways, it's a clue that your cable TV plant is not at all up to modern data spec, and so even the down part isn't likely to work too well.

Well I think online gaming will be better. Dialup has to share with ITSELF, 56k down OR 33.6 up, not both. So if you game on one machine you'll be fine.

Sharing that is going to be hairy, but generally upload is way lower than download. For instance tonight I'm at 30 MB downloaded and 4 MB uploaded, mostly just browsing, and forums and random stuff.

The other thing to keep in mind is how often two (or more) computers will be uploading at the exact same time. Probably not so often.

Yes, four computers sharing 33.6 up isn't ideal... but I'm pretty sure it will be better than dialup at least 80-90% of the time.

It's going to be a lot better than dialup. Just make sure nobody even thinks about sharing files online unless everyone in the house agrees first. Even something like uploading a set of digitital photos online can bring your entire internet (even downstream) to a hault.
