My cable company isn't planning on adding two-way cable to my area in the next year. I can't get DSL because I live 4 miles away from the central office. My only other reasonable option is one-way cable. I understand the basics of how it works - you use the cable modem to download, and a regular modem to upload. But how does this get set up on my side? Do they make special one-way cable modems that have a regular modem built in? Or do I have to use a regular cable modem hooked up to a computer that has a regular modem in it? My preference would be to just hook the cable modem up to my router directly, the way I had it when I had two-way cable in college.

What a crazy freakin' idea. I thought they only did that for satellite.

That setup was common in many areas when the cable companies didn't have the 2-way technology in place and didn't want to lose out to DSL.

All one-way cable modems I've seen have the analog dial-up modem builtin to the cable modem. You don't have your own dial-up account - they configure you to dial into a local ISP that they have an arrangement with.

Oh yea, don't know about using a router with that type configuration. Don't think it's gonna work.

Why won't I be able to use a router? Do one-way cable modems not have ethernet ports? What's a good one-way cable modem?

they have both... most use motorola SB3100D(notice the D) this is a standard SB3100 cable modem with an analog phone modem built in.

i haven't ever worked with telco return modems but, the principal is the same... just a skinny return path over the POTS service.

I can't find that modem for sale anywhere on the Internet. Am I going to have to just get it through my cable company? I'm sure they charge an arm and a leg for it. To rent it is $10 a month, not sure how much to buy.
