Dumb question, but I've never used a tripod before and would like to pull trigger on one prior to trip coming up in a couple weeks.

Not a professional by any means but was thinking about the sub $50 Dolica that lots of people seem to recommend text

But can I use the same tripod for both dslr and a camcorder? I have a Nikon d5000 and a Canon HF11 and would potentially use the tripod with both.

Color me confused.

Yup, both will work on the tripod. What really matters is the size of the screw used to mount the camera and the camcorder. Most likely they are the same and you're good.

Both will fit, but are meant for different uses. With a DSLR tripod you usually want to lock the movements down so that the camera does not move. With a video tripod you usually want to be able to make nice smooth movements to follow the action. You might be able to find one that will work for both, but be sure to research them well and think about what you are using the cameras for.

The Dolica tripod you listed is great, and it comes with a ball-head for your camera.

You can still use the tripod for video, but you need to buy a second head for video use:

Those are some examples, but there are many options from other companies. The thing to note is that video heads have long handles and smooth pan/tilt adjustments. Ball heads for still cameras offer more freedom of movement, but aren't designed for panning/tilting smoothly.

Concur. Been doing that for several years with a Sunpack 8001UT and two heads.
