One to one file sharing program. Is there such a thing?

Ive always wondered about that. Obviously one can use an email sevices, but they often have limited file size transfers. I know AOL seems to allow up to 1gig. But this is sort of like beating around the bush. Why hasn't anybody come up with a pure and basic program where you can easily select a persons address, just like email, and transfer any files to that persons computer.

Like a file sharing program, but on one to one user basis.

So if i have a collection of DVDs, like 20gig in size, and i want to upload them to a friend living overseas, then wouldnt it be really nice to simply initiate the program, select the files to transfer, select the name or address of the person you want to send it to, and then click transfer.

I tried looking on the net for such a program, but i could find it. I guess its because i dont know what the name of such a feature in a program would be.

Anyone here has any ideas on this?

I've wished for the same thing many times.

An FTP client is the easiest way to do that.

There are many to choose from.

AIM, which is the aol instant messenger service if im not mistaken, only allows 1gig at a time, which i read in a some other thread in this forum. So thats not cool if you want to send a massively zipped file containing data like a bunch of DVD movies.

Yousendit also only allows 1gig at a time, unless you have to pay to have more than 1gig. But the real drag is that you have to go through their server, which sort of sucks.

The program im talking about would transfer the file directly from your computer to the recievers computer. It would be a totally personal transaction not involving any other persons, like in file sharing programs, or any company, like in yousendit.

IRC can do that easily but you'd have to both be on at the same time and set up a channel for yourselves. Another program that I think would work is called SoulSeek. It's a P2P and I'm pretty sure you can restrict it to a certain user or users. That way you could set up a folder on your HDD for your friend to download from. As long as you're connected, he can connect any time and download from you, and vice-versa, and no one else can.

Ok. Ill take a look at some of the programs listed. My apologies for making a mistake with AOl and YSI, its just that i checked the YSI sight and it said a maximum of 1gig, while somebody in this forum said aol only allows for 1 gig at a time. But even if YSI allows for more, it still goes through their server, which i dont like. But i guess that could be better since i wouldnt have to keep my computer turned on to allow for a friend to download the file(s).
