I just watched various footage of Javelin missiles hitting obsolete tanks. Nice explosion, lotsa flame and smoke. Then it stops, each and every bloody time. :| That shows me that this fire-and-forget replacement for the Dragoon indeed allows infantry to hit armour with gusto, but it gives me no idea of its effectiveness (even against old fashioned noncomposite armour).

The missile is programmed to look and target a tank's weakest spot, so I do indeed expect it to have some effect depending on the warhead. But I would still like to see the aftermath of a Javelin hitting a newer generation tank with extensive Chobham armour. Afterall, a peashooter can also hit a tank.

Unfortunately, I assume that this would be classified so most will never get to see it (flying turrets from an M47 or M48 mean jacksquat in my book).

I have the same beef with Hellfire missile footage but at least these were used in combat in 91.

Where did you watch that? TLC or the History Channel? I have to brush up on my military firepower.

I used to be the military guru in my 4th grade class. I could name every missile, airplane, and helicopter in the U.S. Armed Forces. I just dropped it and I've forgotten most of it now, but in this current climate, maybe it was a good thing I did.

Any smart army will cover up the power of its weapons, best to let your foe underestimate you.

AMD_Junkie,

Uh...Who underestimates the U.S.?

Forget the Javelin, and Hellfires, The A-10 has the best tank plinker in the business, the MOST powerful gatling gun ever fitted on an aircraft, the GAU-8:). The gun itself is the size of a Volkswagen and it fires rounds that are the size of milk bottles! The uranium depleted rounds goes through the energy absorbent armour, and then bounces around in the tank:)

Back to the Hellfire, what do you expect from such a small weapon? Wanna see something more pitiful, watch a TOW missile hit a tank. Bleck. How about watching some CBU-52s...bleck too. I do feel sorry for anyone OUTSIDE a tank though.

During Desert Storm, F-15Es and F-111s went out to get some tanks with GBU-12s. 500LBs on explosives landing smack dob on a tank must turn out a pretty good show! Just imagine one of them hitting a helicopter, as an F-15E managed to do during the war.

Just for you guys, I'm gonna go get me some tank plinking shots:)

Hirohito? Understandable. He almost could've wiped out the Pacific fleet, but the US got lucky. Hussein? He had other fish to fry when he started his war. Namely, his own people! Slobadan...well...I dunno what he was thinking:)
