I thought I also read somewhere the DNA breaks down in organic material over time. During the whole Jurassic park era when people were losing their minds about extracting blood from a mosquito in amber that might have bitten a dinosaur. They quickly found that the DNA had broken down so much it was impossible to perform any sort of sequencing.

I can't wait. Then my dream of marrying a gay mammoth can finally come true.

mammoths were around during the time of neaderthals and cro-magnon. We have successfully harvested neanderthal DNA from bone, and made a rather decent genomic assembly from this material.

...a difference of around 70million years in age helps, of course. :p

as to the potential of Mammoth steaks--will people really be willing to consume genetically modified pre-historic meat? :hmm:

In the name of science, sure, I would.

It would probably taste like chicken.

I wonder how many people would pay good money to live in a prehistoric village and hunt big game with a spear?

If they're willing to eat McDonald's and Taco Bell, they'll be willing to eat anything. Serve it in the drive-thru in a $4.99 Mammoth Meal and people will be lining up to buy it.

Fuck mammoths, I want a pet Smilodon.

And a dire wolf.

And maybe a giant ground sloth.

Yeah, I think it does, but I also read that certain bird DNA can be gene manipulated to back track and end up with a T-Rex again. Besides, mammoths are like furry elephants, and people won't eat elephants. If I can't eat it then I care...less.

What if after all this mammoth steak isn't even good? I guess we'll just have to kill them all and try something else.
