One reason bike lanes suck, with MSPaint.

Riding along the street in downtown Austin. Minding all traffic laws. Stopping at the incessant red lights every damn block. BOOM. Ninja.

Yes, actually happened to me a few years ago. I slammed into the person and the car door. Doing 25 mph.

Yeah that sucks. That's why if I can't maintain a 3foot distance from parked cars, I just ride in the lane.

That's one of my biggest fears when riding downtown. You OK?

At least in Minneapolis, it's illegal to ride on the sidewalk.

Another thing I don't like about bike lanes is how people rarely check them before making a turn across them. Terrifying.

Destroyed my carbon fork and Kysrium wheel. Busted my Ultregra brifters. They paid for all the repairs and replacements.

WAIT, aren't bike lanes usually really close to the curb? And isn't it a traffic violation to drive into the bike lane? At least here it is.

Not when there is also a parking lane.

It's still better than no bike lanes.

You gotta assume that there will always be an inherent risk in riding a bike...

Yes..with no bike lane you'd be hit by the parked car as in the image as well as the car driving to the left of you..

Can we add a new law that states:

Addition of MS Paint vastly increases the awesomeness of any thread, from ~200-750%.

?

That's parking.

FWIW that looks like Guadalupe St next to campus here, called 'the drag'. That whole street from 15th to 32nd is all jacked up.

There's one side of street parking with a bike lane running in between that and the two car lanes(like the OP's picture). Then there's the double yellow lines and two more car lanes + a bike lane on the other side. Street lights every couple of blocks, lots of no left/right turns all over the place, tons of pedestrians and a couple of intersections where the lanes happen to shift over a couple of feet with little to no markings make for some extremely frustrating driving. There's usually a couple of people a year to taken out by cars while trying to cross the street.

Oh, don't forget busses that stop all the time in the right lanes clogging up the works.. there's both city and campus busses that stop along there.

This will happen to cars driving on the road as well.

Never underestimate the unbridled ignorance and carelessness of every other driver on the road. After moving to Berzerkeley nearly a year ago, I've learned to accept that any parked or parking car is a potential death hazard, for me or the other individual. It baffles my mind how blissfully unaware are 98% of the other drivers and pedestrians in this freaking crazy-ass town.

The solution is simple. As a stationary object, it is your obligation not to impede traffic. Don't just open your door like a retard. Don't just check your mirrors. Turn and look over your freakin shoulder. :)
