I am upgrading from a AMD based 6600 GT system to an Intel setup

I am going to get a motherboard with 2x PCI-ex16 slots, one of the new core 2 duo ones.

I have 3 monitors, one 20 inch widescreen and 2 17 inch 4:3s

Should I power my main monitor with my new 7900GT and the 2 17 inchers with the older 6600 GT?

Or use the dual link functionality on the new card to power all 3?

As far as I know, Dual-Link DVI doesn't allow you to connect two monitors to it. Its just a wider signal stream so that you can power even higher resolution monitors.

Oh right I thought I could connect 2 D-sub connectors to one of the DVIs and the main monitor to the other?

That would be your best bet.

Power two monitors from the faster card and the third one from the older card.

Dual-link DVI is for one really big monitor, not for two.
