One of Two is Down - with an update (should be done soon)

Well, I'm still having major problems with my family's computer (won't even boot Windows anymore) and asked a friend of mine, who's a recent CS grad - brilliant guy, for help. He loaned me a program called SpinRite 5.0 to help me out with data recovery/error fixing. Here's a link that explains more about it - SpinRite 5.0. According to their website, "SpinRite is the most capable, thorough, and reliable utility that has ever been created for the long term maintenance, recovery, and repair of mass storage systems." It'll take awhile to finish up, but after everything's all said and done it'll be back up and running again. I just hope nothing is lost and I don't end up dead later today... 😉 Wish me luck!

PS - So far, I'd highly recommend using SpinRite to anyone who uses the FAT32 storage system on their hard drives. It's pretty darn impressive.

PSS - From the SpinRite 5.0 website - "Scandisk is probably guilty of more data loss than any other utility ever created." I found that VERY interesting to learn.

UPDATE - Only 2 hours (out of 12) of data recovery to go! 😱 Thank goodness for multiple comupters...

It's a very intensive (read: SLOW 😉) hard drive recovery program - only 12 hours to go! I'll keep you updated as I see fit...

<< Good luck!

Your not putting ME back on there are you?
>>

As soon as the data is recovered (hopefully it will be), I will be putting W2k on that computer.

I ran spinrite on a dying drive once and it took over 45 hours and was still only 20% done so I killed the power..... and the drive 😱 DONT EXIT THE PROGRAM UNTIL ITS DONE! And good luck!

If the problem is Windows is toast but you can still read the data on the drive the quickest way to solve a problem like that is put in another HD, install the OS on it, and copy your necessary data over to the new one. Every system at my house has 2 drives. One is for the OS and programs and the other for storage. Install your OS and get it setup the way you want it then use Ghost and dump an image of it onto your storage drive. Repeat the dump as necessary. As long as you don't lose both drives at once you're in good shape. 🙂

That's the way I have this computer set up. I have a 10GB boot drive and two 40GB storage drives. However, I am not so lucky with the other computer. Only one drive there. I'd pick up another if I could, but I'm pretty short on cash at the moment as I just moved back home for a semester and haven't found a job yet. Hopefully SpinRite will be done in 2.5-3 hours or so and everything will be recovered. If not, then I wouldn't mind a fresh install on that computer anyways... Mom wouldn't like that all of her school files were deleted though. Just cuz I'm curious, how much space (if I were to partition it's current hard drive should SpinRite not work out) should I give to the Windows 2000 Professional operating system? On my computer, it takes up a little more than 2GB, so does 3-4GB sound like it'd be fine? Thanks...
