One of the worst hockey plays you'll ever see

Looks like the puck skipped over his stick because of bad ice, not really his fault regardless of what the commentator says. It's not like he was showboating.

In all seriousness, that's perfectly plausible but still embarrassing as hell.

 half-full: a point for the Oilers courtesy of the hockey gods.

 half-empty: should have been 2 points though, since they blew a 4-1 lead.

an amazing and shocking play nonetheless.

if you knew anything about hockey you would know that you shoot for the open net pretty much when you have the chance to.

you don't skate the puck in like you're walking your dog on Sunday morning, that's classless. if he would have just shot the puck, it would have been game over.

anyway, Ray Ferraro is not a douche.

Wrong.

He had a clear shot almost from the blueline.

Instead, he dilly dallies down toward the net, & then when it's like a foot away from being in the net, decides to backhand it into the empty net, which is when it skipped over a patch of bad ice.

It was the most ridiculous thing i have ever seen, but it worked out rather well for my Oilers :D

Actually I have to disagree with you partially. You're right he should have shot it earlier, but if you look at any other empty net goal you'll see the player, more often than not, skate to the slot (area right above the crease) and shoot from there. Making a shot from the blue line isn't the easiest thing in the world and there's a chance he could miss.

Quite a few shots at empty nets DO miss, because they are often taken under duress, with a frantic player right on you trying to prevent it or block it. That said, NHL-calibre hockey players, in the open, would probably hit the net 99 times out of 100.

He should have put it in when he had the chance, at the slot at the latest - not waited until he was in the crease. I'm sure every player on the Stars would agree.

You are telling me most player wait until they are on the blue paint till they shoot? Cause you did see that's what he did, right?

Which sport are we talking about here

He could shot that from anywhere once he got closer & not missed, but he obviously had something flashy in mind...or maybe he was suddenly hit by retardedness, because no one waits till they are almost into an empty net to shoot.

Was really funny to see though :D

He could have broken his stick on his shot and then all of you would have been saying how he should have skated it in.. Or the puck could have hit a patch of bad ice as he was shooting and it could have gone 20 ft wide... or he could have caught an edge on his skate...

The point is that it was a freak accident.

Eh it doesn't really matter, but he was going for the backhand shot when the puck when it jumped over his stick.

But wtf would he switch to backhand when you have a clear forehand shot the whole way in.

Then he suddenly switched as he's about to go by the net

Mistake? Yes.

But incredibly stupid one? Even more so :D

I just hope he continues to do more of that, since there are few teams i hate more than Dallas ;)

It wasn't bad that he totally missed an open net but he could have swallowed the puck by poking it to the corner to waste some time. He really doesn't belong in the NHL after that play. That was a combination of lazieness and stupidity. I can't believe this guy was the #1 overall pick one year.

For all the Oilers fans ragging on this guy, I'll just mention Steve Smith. :p

Wiki
their bid for a third straight championship ? ?three-peat? ? came to an end in game 7 of the 1985-86 Smythe Division Finals against the Calgary Flames. In the third period of a 2-2 tie, rookie defenceman Steve Smith banked his breakout pass off goaltender Grant Fuhr's left skate and into the Oilers' net. The goal stood as the game- and-series-winning goal.

Smyth had a very good career after this mishap.
