One of the odd things about Anandtech...

You have to love how so many people who hate each other so viciously (or dislike each other, or would never be at all able to hold a civil or interesting conversation in real life) still come back time and time again and get to know each other pretty well, all because of ATOT.

Smile on your brother
Everybody get together
Try to love one another
Right now:music:

It's not really something odd about AT.

I think it'd happen more in real life if people were required to communicate to some degree with the people they don't like. The thing is that here, we don't have much choice in who's posts we read if we really want to participate in the forum.

If this mix of people were thrown together in real life, probably none of them would come back a second time. That's why AT is a little strange...

You're just stating my point again. :)

People don't leave because they have another part of the forum (or just other people) that they enjoy communicating with.

People get rabid when they're behind a keyboard and there's no face behind their words. These same people would not get offended or ticked off about half this stuff if it happened during face to face conversation. People on ATOT are like drunks- some are friendly drunks and some are angry drunks, but most of us wouldn't act that way sober :)

thats true.
but its considerably easier to sit in ones workplace/home and read/post than it would be to phsyically go somewhere to meet up with people you have a high potential to hate.

It was a sig quote that got me thinking about this: "Nik is like a fine wine. You want to leave him sealed up in the celler for many years..." -Pyonir

I know pyonir doesn't hate nik :)heart: to both Shaun and nik, btw) but if you're on the forums there are people you get to know that you would probably never get to know in real life. There's this entire culture of inside jokes and references (st ab, cousin, YAGT, spider, Soviet Russia, Red Dawn, luvly, etc.) shared by a bunch of people that probably wouldn't have anything else in common. At least, judging by some of the net meets I've been too...

I have no idea what you're talking about. My friendliness is just a facade so I can get everybody's address and steal their girlfriend.

That is soooo true. I was trying to explain to the b/f .. how when some ppl post, you KNOW what the reaction of certain others will be. And how certain ppl will say stuff to a member that no others would get away with. And how when certain members are disliked by a certain group of others, or liked (no matter what they say) by others. The inside jokes, references, and shared commaraderie (sp) shared by some, and how even when some are ripping others to shreds, they will be very protective of others. And the obligatory group clique'.

It really is like a schoolyard playground in here!

I like ATOT people more than people in real life because when I don't want to deal with ATOT I can just close my browser.

In real life I would never come in to contact with 99.9% of this forum. This is the only forum I've ever belonged to, and I just come back for the hilarity of it all. I used to watch TV when I was killing time, now I post here.

I keep coming back because it's like watching a car crash - you can't help but look.

Actually, I'm amazed at the people who argue vehemently about things they have no clue about - because they read something somewhere, or their buddy told them.

I only argue about things I'm an authority on. For instance, things related to my job - which I've done well for the past 18 years.

I come back because I'm egotistical enough to imagine some of the folks remember me and that a small percentage of those remember why they remember me.

Also, it's my "first love". I discovered the main AnandTech website a long time ago when Anand was still in highschool. And it is my first forum as well.

Well, no matter how hard I try not to, I remember you. :p

You forgot the adjective "fondly". ;) Yeah, I can't forget my libertarian mentor.
