I'd had listened to some of Isis' stuff over the years, and while I thought it was interesting, it had never really clicked for me. A few weeks ago I got their newest album (it's not actually new) "In the Absence of Truth" and HOLY SHIT, I still cannot get over its sheer awesomeness.
Fans of Tool and Opeth will find some familiar elements - a dark atmoshere, long, well-developed songs (average about 8 minutes), complex-yet-tight rhythm patterns, heavy male singing accentuated with the occasional growl, etc.
Yet they are definitely not imitators of either - their music is much more instrumental (there is very little singing), they are much more moody and "atmospheric". The songs really need your attention - they develop slowly and deliberately, with progressively more and more layers, complexity, tension and richness until they finish with a bang.
Definitely some of the best stuff I've heard in a while and its the perfect music for sitting alone in a dark room and letting your mind wander (though it might be a bit too hard for listening while high, I am not sure)
