One of the best albums I've heard in a while

I'd had listened to some of Isis' stuff over the years, and while I thought it was interesting, it had never really clicked for me. A few weeks ago I got their newest album (it's not actually new) "In the Absence of Truth" and HOLY SHIT, I still cannot get over its sheer awesomeness.

Fans of Tool and Opeth will find some familiar elements - a dark atmoshere, long, well-developed songs (average about 8 minutes), complex-yet-tight rhythm patterns, heavy male singing accentuated with the occasional growl, etc.

Yet they are definitely not imitators of either - their music is much more instrumental (there is very little singing), they are much more moody and "atmospheric". The songs really need your attention - they develop slowly and deliberately, with progressively more and more layers, complexity, tension and richness until they finish with a bang.

Definitely some of the best stuff I've heard in a while and its the perfect music for sitting alone in a dark room and letting your mind wander (though it might be a bit too hard for listening while high, I am not sure)

I luv ISIS.

Panopticon is also incredibly good.

Their earlier stuff (Oceanic, The Red Sea) is good too, but much harder/harsher not as melodic.

Thanks for the recommendation, I will give it a listen. My favorite metal music store just e-mailed a coupon to me to say thanks for buying during their Christmas sale, might use it on this. :)

ISIS are one of my favorite bands of all time.. IMO Panopticon is their finest hour. I dig all their releases a lot but that one in particular just comes together for me.

I love the new direction they're taking too, Gibsons, have you heard the new tune?

Check that shit out if you havent.

You'd better believe I'm grabbing that vinyl when it drops.. I've got Oceanic, Panopticon and ITAOT on vinyl and the sound difference is pretty noticeable to me. You can hear a lot more lush guitar soundscapes going on.

I have to say I wouldn't really put this band with Tool and Opeth though, I think they're definitely more about creating moods.

If you guys dig ISIS but aren't looking for super heavy vocals/riffs, check out Red Sparrowes (spelled this way).. it's members of ISIS and Neurosis in sort of a post rock, explosions in the sky, type vein.

OP you may want to give these guys Neurosis1 Neurosis2 a shot. One of my favourite bands of all time. Check out the "A Sun That Never Sets" album which I think is the standout from their more recent material, though I love everything they do.
