i just got a Dlink 604 router and I'm using it to a split a static IP DSL connection. anyways, one of the computers that i'm splitting to is downloading really slow... however if I hook up a laptop to the router it downloads just fine... what is wrong? i tried to format the problematic computer already... could it be the cat 5 cable??? thats the only thing I can think of.
any ideas??
thanx.

To rule out the Cable issue, put the Laptop at the end of the same cable, and try.

Otherwise.

Disable all Software Firewall, or and active Virus scanner.

Look in System Properties, and make sure that the drivers are installed, and there is no hardware conflict.

Recheck all Network settings in the Control Panel Network Connections.

Try this:

Download DrTCP: <a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.dslre
ports.com/front/DRTCP019.exe">http://www.dslreports.com/front/DRTCP019.exe</a>

Run the proggie, it will show the current settings of TCP/IP parameters. Write them down.

You can change any variable that you want, click Apply, and reboot the computer, if no good; you can always change to your original values.

Example for good values:

Tcp Receive - 255552

Window Scaling - Yes

Time Stamping - No

Selective Acks - Yes

Path MTU Discovery - Yes.

Black Hole - NO

Max Duplicate - 2

TTL - 64

MaxMTU - 1492

ok, i ruled out the cat 5 cable...

i haven't tried that dsl reports thing yet... but here's some more info:

i just tried using this Qcheck thing to check ping times between the computers and the problematic computer is really inconsistent when testing throughput and response times...
sometimes i'll get 500 ms delay times...
wtf?
sometimes it won't respond at all..

sounds like cable or nic driver. Maybe update your drivers. You should never get timeouts on a LAN.

-edit- or possible bad port on switch. make sure your speed/duplex setting on the NIC are auto/auto.

If you put the Laptop at the bad computer?s end, and it was working OK, you can assume that the cable and the Router?s switch port are fine.

The culprit is the ?Bad? computer, the timing that you get are too low to be solved by DrTCP (use it anyway on all computers; it probably will improve your bandwidth).

You should concentrate on the drivers (as suggested by spidey); also check for hardware conflict, a share IRQ with another "narcissistic card" can do it. You can also install NetBEUI if it is working under NetBEUI it means TCP/IP setting problems.
