I have a small network that's connected to a dsl router.
1/2 my users are allowed internet access, the other 1/2 are not.
I always thought that you needed to have TCP/IP configured with and IP address, DNS Servers and a Gateway address before you could get internet access off the router.
So, I happen to be at the receptionist's desk (not supposed to have internet access) and see the little Microsoft Instant Messenger icon in her tray. She gets up to go to lunch and I have a seat and try to figure out why she has access.
I double-check her settings and she doesn't have an IP address, their is no gateway listed, and no DNS servers listed. She does have TCP/IP installed.
What's the deal ?? How can she have full internet access ???
I think I need to be schooled here, so please let me know what the loophole is.
I'm thinking it may have to do with the new router that I got when I signed up with Qwest. I think I read somewhere that "IP addresses automatically assigned by server". So, someone help me out.
FYI - running Win98 machines and the router is a CISCO 678
