I have a small network that's connected to a dsl router.

1/2 my users are allowed internet access, the other 1/2 are not.

I always thought that you needed to have TCP/IP configured with and IP address, DNS Servers and a Gateway address before you could get internet access off the router.

So, I happen to be at the receptionist's desk (not supposed to have internet access) and see the little Microsoft Instant Messenger icon in her tray. She gets up to go to lunch and I have a seat and try to figure out why she has access.

I double-check her settings and she doesn't have an IP address, their is no gateway listed, and no DNS servers listed. She does have TCP/IP installed.

What's the deal ?? How can she have full internet access ???

I think I need to be schooled here, so please let me know what the loophole is.

I'm thinking it may have to do with the new router that I got when I signed up with Qwest. I think I read somewhere that "IP addresses automatically assigned by server". So, someone help me out.

FYI - running Win98 machines and the router is a CISCO 678
 
Without an ip address or gateway there isnt a way for her to get that stuff through tcp/ip. What protocol are the other users using? Check the IM client to see if a proxy or something has been setup... Kinda freaky 😛
 
well everyone pretty much has NetBEUI, IPX/SPX, and TCP/IP.

Need it all for printers, Netware OS, and internet access.

I installed TCP/IP on all users, and figured that I could "turn on/off" the internet access by adding the DNS Servers and IPs.

Now something shady is going on and I thought maybe when they taught networking stuff, that I must've missed a day or something, because I didn't think with her setup that this was possible.

I will be checking the IM client this evening ..... I'm all over that like stink on sh!t.

But does anyone know if it's possible to set it up this way to circumvent that windows network settings ??
 
Deinstall TCP/IP on those workstations...they've either configured an IP addy + DNS server (which isn't that hard) or there is a DHCP server on the network somewhere.

If you needed IP, you could configure their default gateway to point to an invalid address...that should prevent them from going off your subnet. Of course, users could easily change that, and be right back on again.

You may have to install a proxy server and/or a firewall, to prevent outside access. At this point it becomes easier to control it, because it's part of the network, rather than users' computers. At the same time, the cost is going up fairly significantly.

I bet 100 to 1 that when the Qwest tech installed the new CISCO router that he enabled DHCP.

My users can barely use WordPerfect, so I think I'll set the gateway address to an invalid IP, in order to cut off their access.

yeah it looks like dhcp enable, so you click on settings it's all blank but if theres a dhcp some where.. she's getting on.... you know once you disable it.. she'll be like why is there no inet access... like the plug i'm gonna pull on internet shopping sites here hahahahahahahaa
