Ok last night at about 3 am there was a little gang warfare going on behind my house (yes i live in the hood)

Usually the thugs leave me alone, and I leave them alone, but a stray bullet found its way into my kitchen, taking out a potted plant my mom gave me and then lodging itself into my old P75 laptop i had sitting by the phone cracking blocks, I'm still not sure if i can salvage the hard drive, but the rest of the cow is ground beef. It didnt have an internet connection, so i just used a floppy to get the buff-out file to another computer every couple days, I had missed a while, and it had about 8 days of cracking done and un-flushed :| bummer

Im requesting the Team AnandTech members fly thier respective flags at half staff for a day or two to honor one of its lost cows. :(

Nope, power is the one thing i CAN count on, near the inner-city, the power grid is so redundant the power hasnt gone out here in about 6 years. My friends in other neighborhoods have thier power go out a few times a year.

Ive got a pretty good phone line too, average 52k connections, most people outside the city get about 40-45k

(Mouth wide open) At least it was the P75 instead of you! I wouldn't mind a stray bullet hitting my computer (not that I want a bullet striking it in the first place...), and not hitting me.

Thank goodness you're safe!
By any means I'd sacrfice any, or all of my machines to keep from catching a bullet!
You can always get more 'puters, but a secomd life is impossible to come by.

Oh yeah, better get to work on that HD, there's good blocks in there.
Heh heh.

man you guys in the city have it rough. Get a computer shot, have to use a dial up, and only get a 52k connection. Man I am out here in boondocks of New Hampshire, and I can get a 54666 connection reguraly. I feel for you man. And may your laptop R.I.P (Rest in Pieces)

strates.

p.s: I used the word "man" way to often in this post, I apologize.

So Train, when are you moving out? :)

I feel for ya man, but I cant help see the irony. There are times when you wish you could put a bullet in your computer, and then someone does it for you when you least want it.

If you are going to salvage the hard-drive, if it uses a standard IDE interface, run it as a slave or on the secondary IDE channel so you can just access it, no point trying to boot it up if it is configured for a notebook.

Anyone trys to take one of my cows out is gonna have to dodge some return fire! Since I was only 1 point away from a perfect score on my academy qualification, they had better dodge real fast.

Maybe it was a /. sniper trying to slow us down to keep from being passed.

On a serious note though, sorry to hear that. Keep your head down out there.

This was no accident!! I was there and saw the shooter, he had a teardrop shaped tattoo by his right eye that said SLASHDOT in it :|

Glad you were not near it when it happened, sorry about the laptop.

Wow, that's quite a story, sorry to hear that. But it is very good news that the computer took the bullet and not yourself.

wow thanks for the suppport guys i hadent checked the forums ina few days.

Well the police finnaly got around to me (a whole 4 days later, sheesh) and I showed them the mangled cow. I gave him some bogus specs of course, saying it was a PII 250 (Still fits in the "older" category, he he :p) and they said some recently abducted local thugs might get to foot the bill (if identified as the same ones who were behind my house) for a replacement. I'm assuming that means a blue book value $check$ which would be cool, since laptops are more expensive than desktops, and it was a tad older, maybe i could get a decent cracking machine for the money i get from it.

I dont plan on moving though, the neighborhood is actually a lot better now than it was 10 years ago. Sure there are the random fits of violence, but they get fewer each year, and I live in a 100 year old house that I cant bring myself to sell.

What do you plan on doing with the labtop after you salvage the hard drive from it? If you plan on trashing it Id pay shipping plus a few bucks for it. Course if you want it as a souvinier I dont blame you ;)

i think some of the parts are salvageable, err at least the hard drive might be, but it just looked too cool the way the bullet was wedged in there (the cop took the bullet :( ) maybe ill get around to getting a picture of it scanned and post it here,
