Key is finding a good deal on a used car.

Bought a 94 Volvo 940 in late 2007 with 75k miles on it.

Approximate costs so for.

2500$ for the car.
50$ spark plugs/cables.
250$ timing belt.
240$ set of tires.
25$ oil change ever 3k miles.
$$ for other minor upkeep costs, air filter, etc.

And that's about it. I've put 60k miles on it so far and it has never quit on me once, thing is a fricking tank. It's all about finding the right one.

That's some insane luck. You must have found a desperate seller to let go of that car for 2500. That or it's got some serious paint/interior issues.

Not really. Before used car prices skyrocketed it was super easy to find Volvos of that vintage in great condition for $1500-3000. In 2005 I bought an 89 Volvo 740 with 80k miles, one owner, flawless, for less than $2k.
