One Login to Rule them All!

This has been bugging me for awhile regarding AT. That is that there are Multiple Logins required for various parts of the Website. Forums, Comments on Articles, System Config area, and probably other things I have never used.

Probably not a big deal for the Majority of Users, but somehow over the years my various Login info has become all mixed up, e-mails have changed, yadda yadda ya...I've lost access to one area or another because of it.

It just seems to me that instead of Parting the Website into various sections, it would make more sense to just make One Login that gives Access to all features available through AT.

Anyway[/weak rant]

I have a feeling the new change coming to AT might use shared database for the forum (vB) and the main site, so One Login to Rule Them All might be in the works already.

That is virtually impossible at this point in time. You're talking about a mutual login to systems running in Windows and Linux, which is difficult in itself. Then you have the issue of user precedence - does a forum user override a commenter user's right to the same name? Very messy.

Impossible, if there is One Login to all features. You wouldn't Register for the Forums, then again to make Comments on Articles, then again for System Rigs. You would Register to use Anandtech.com, which allows you to use Forums, make Comments on Articles, do System Rigs, etc.

Uh, no shit. The point I was making is that since separate accounts already exist for the forums, rigs, article comments and so on, any centralization would mean that some order would have to be worked out for who ends up with ownership over the merged account.

I would think that Forum Users take precedence.

Don't get all excited, it's just a hunch from what admin and Anand have said, nothing concrete on this.

I can concretely say that is the plan. >1 login is stupid, and is working on being rectified. No ETA though, but the DBA's and application owners are working on a process to do exactly that. They are all working on vB for the most part now though.

Excellent. Always wondered why there wasn't integration between main page and forums. Thought it made more sense to use forum posts as commenting system.

Thanks for the confirmation! I moved you up on my personal "cool mods" list 😛

Agreed, the article commenting system is...less than optimal. It is hard to check for new replies.

But Yllus said that it would be.. Impossible! Are you using magic?

I would very much like something like this. It would encourage me to post more comments on articles (sometimes I'm too lazy to log in), and it would make it easier if there were some notification of replies or a way to check for replies to said comments.
