Hey episodic - I did a bit of editing and cropping to the second one. From this type of shot you really need a tripod and cable release. Also I would use a shutter speed around 1/200th or higher.

That sharpens it up a bit, and crops it. I didn't like the other part of the flower encroaching in the shot as it takes away from your main subject, which is this group of flowers here.

that looks too grainy

what kind of camera are you taking pictures with?

Fuji F10 - handheld shots

try putting your camera is "macro" mode next time you take pictures of flowers.

A tripod could help, but not necessary if it's real bright out.

It was in macro mode 😛

I may have jumped up too fast. I live in a small southern town, and it is regarded as fairly strange to be walking around bent over photographing flowers, so I tend to do it quickly and discretly. LOL

What other people think about you shouldn't matter...Next time just take your time. Does it really matter if someone thinks you're weird for enjoying photography? Especially if they're a stranger?

What sharpen feature did you use? I'm assuming photoshop? Do you 'smart sharpen' 'unsharp mask', etc? What settings do you use.

I used a 3-pass method with the unsharp mask filter with the following settings:

1st Pass:

160
1
0

2nd and 3rd Pass:

15
100
0

Then I adjusted levels - darkened up the background a little bit to make the flowers stand out more. Then I used noise ninja to get rid of some of the noise and give it a smoother look.

There...secret is out 😛 That 3-pass with sharpen up most photos. It can be adjusted from there for different types of photos, but as general sharpening it works well.

You will see some grain when you sharpen because sharpening is basically just adding noise. However, when printed on photographic paper it will not be so apparent - even though you can see it on your screen.

You are of course correct.

Episodic <----- socially phobic, gets physically ill in large crowds, refuses to go into a walmart due to crowding, and general anxiety disorder kinda person 🙂

I'm more the 'noone else around for two miles' kinda guy.

What you did in your "better" shot is you moved either too far forward or too far back after the camera achieved focus lock. If you look at the flower on the right border it is in focus, and rather sharp, which means this shot is out of focus not due to motion blur, but too much front or backwards motion. In macro depth of field is incredibly shallow, usually a centimeter or less, usually in the millimeters.
