I will make it quick and simple....I own a Leadtek 6600GT TDH. I am waiting for G80 R600 to upgrade because I am not picky about my 1280X960 settings with medium on all the current games *edit...Plus I have nowhere near enough money =(. Source runs perfect so thats all I can ask for.

Question: Is overclocking my video card going to give me that extra little 10fps jump to last through the next 6-8 months or however long or keeping it at default just about the best it can do.

personally, FPS>eye candy

Thanks again Anandtechers!

I would say that was up to you. If you like all the eye candy on, then no. If playing with no aa and some settings turned down doenst bother you, then maybe, but that's your call.

Doh! I just read that part. Then it depends on your resolution. You can always see my sig, that'll get you through till G80/R580 :)

If games are feeling choppy, generally speaking, overclocking isn't going to cut it. Overclocking is more for those 'icing on the cake' frames ;).

You should look for a used X800XL/6800GT/X800GTO2, which would be a nice upgrade to the 6600GT.

I overclocked a Duron 1.8 GHz to 2.25 GHz and saw some nice gains in UT2004. As a matter of fact, some maps were finally playable.

Upgrading the video card now would be pointless. If you don't care for AA, and extreme resolutions, what's the point of chaning GPUs now? I bet you can try overclocking the CPU and it will make a difference. But, I don't believe in overclocking so I just got a 3400+ 2.4 GHz to replace my Duron 1.8 GHz.

Oh sorry, I wasn't clear in my post - my bad! I meant overclocking the video card!

Overclocking the video card never gives massive gains (on air cooling anyways) because no matter what you'll still have the same architecture, number of pipes, etc.

With CPU's it's totally different, as you can push CPU's much farther, such as the popular P4 1.8A @ 2.4-2.7 Ghz, P4 2.4C @ 3.1 Ghz, AthlonXP 2500+ @ 2.2 to 2.4 Ghz, Athlon64 3000+ @ 2.6 Ghz, etc (all are just ballpark figures, of course).

Yea, I was reading into overclocking my processor BUT, I have no idea how to do any of that stuff. I am minimally literate with computers...

I have the processor you listed in your sig jiffylube. Athlon64 3000+

Will overclocking help that much and is it easY?

overclocking is always dangerous. Make sure you have good airflow and your temps are decent. Look in the CPU/Overclocking forums and read Zebo's A64 OC Guide (it's stickied).

Just overclocking your CPU isnt going to help you much at all except in CPU limited situations like UT2004.

Maybe something like 550/1100 wouldn't hurt. It would def help you improve your frames, and might last you till the next cycle.

1. Get Coolbits OC hack. 2. Optimize the OC. 3. Up the OC about 10mgz on core and medium. My friend did this with his, and he got ~5 more FPS with a 3200+, stock speed. I did this with my SLi'ed PCIE's, and I got ~20 FPS, with a 3200+ Whinie at stock. And drop the resolutions.

Yes, 1024*, with good overclocking will increase frames, unless you're on a LCD. Coolbits has a button that finds an appropriate speed. Usually, you can push it a bit higher than that without artifacting.

Hell, I'm running my 6600GT at 565/1220, compared to stock of 500/1000.

Overclocking can definitely help. With these cards, you can get around ~10 fps gain in 1024 res with 6600GT overclocking on air. I know because thats what i did. I know cuz i have a Chaintech AGP 6600GT which is stock 500/900 clocks. Oced to 570/1.06 and i gained about 7 fps in BF2. The PCIe 6600GTs oc better on their memory as well.
