It's too bad that bringing back the paddle would result in BILLIONS lost by Big Pharm.

The problem is that a lot of medicines actually do raise the quality of life of people who have severe disease.

IMHO however, a lot of medicine manufacturers also make a mess of it. The desire is not to heal the sick but to get rich. Thus no useful medicine will arise. Only medicines with more harmful side effects will arise when compared to the ailment that was supposed to be treated. The desire for power will blind the mind.

While it can be said that both diabetes and depression both stems from an imbalance of chemicals, the difference is that type 1 diabetes is purely genetic, and for depression, the imbalance of chemicals may be caused by poor attitudes or other cognitive dysfunctions that require therapy and proper socialization that just numbing out the symptoms with drugs won't help with.

IMO depression is probably genetic too. Ever notice how completely insane/neurotic women always have neurotic daughters? Either that or there's very specific parenting method that creates exact neurotic replicas of the parents :D

Between food with unpronounceable chemicals in it that cause any number of side effects, parents who can't raise kids for shit and doctors who hand out pharmaceuticals like candy it's really a surprise it's not a higher ratio then that even.

Haha you took the words right out of my mouth. I haven't seen solid evidence for a genetic basis of depression other than it runs in families which the whole parenting confound immediately comes into mind.

And you hit my family right on. My mom has this total selfless people serving condition, and she's all about supressing your own desires to be secure.
She teaches this to us and I can tell that my sister totally eats it all up and she's going through all the same depression crap my mom is going through.
Seriously, it's not a mystery that if you put all your focus on pleasing others that you're going to feel drained out and others aren't going to give you the appreciation you deserve because you're so imposing on your help.
And supressing what you truly love to do for security is the best way to drain yourself of dopamine.
I hope one day they can figure it out. :'(

I think this is about the poor trying to rise above their level. They learn that all these characters on TV end up overcoming and feel they will too.

In the end, drugs soothe them.
