One HELLUVA loaded Toshiba laptop for 1999 - 100MIR! EDIT: Read first 10 posts - caveat emptor

I didn't give this much thought the first time I looked at it, but DAMN - this beats the HELL outta anything Dell is selling for a comparable price. This deal is so unbelieveable that it MUST be a typo. That equip in a Dell would cost MUCH more. The fact that it's 1899 after rebate is just gravy.

1.1Ghz Pentium III
512MB SDRAM
40GB HD
WinXP Home
GF42Go 440 32MB (no, that's NOT a typo)
15" UltraXGA (1600x1200) Display
TV-Out and 5.1 DD Out (according to the page)
Modem/NIC Built-In
DVD-CD-R/W combo drive
3 USB ports, 1 Firewire
Built-in SmartMedia and SD slot

EDIT 1: Ok, this is SIZZLING now. Amazon has the same laptop with free shipping and a 200 dollar promotional gift certificate in ADDITION to the 100 dollar MIR. This is too damned good to pass up - Imma see if I can get this. Only caveat is that the laptop isn't available yet at Amazon. But DAMN, for 1999 - 100 - 200 Instant GC and FREE SHIPPING? YOW! A little wait and a state-of-the-art laptop shows up for effectively 1699. The GC offer is only good until Feb 28th...so you might wanna call if you want it immediately - Amazon might say no if you order online and it doesn't ship until mid-March...just FYI. The rebate is good until June 13, 2002.

EDIT 2: Changed specs to read REGULAR P3 1.1Ghz. Didn't know there was such a thing - still a damned good deal, though - plus I just learned somehow that this thing has a mini-subwoofer in it.

Amazon Link (After Log Out & Check To Make Sure I Wasn't Still Signed In)

EDIT 3: Changed topic name for a third time telling people to read first 10 comments to include Rainguy's sage advice. This thing looks amazing on its whitesheet. There's a reason why so many people are on here. It's for checks and balances like this. Still a relatively good deal, but even I could see where this thing could guzzle power like a Vegas slot-jockey with free drinks.

EDIT 4: Guh. Ok. This is the last damned edit. Evidently this thing is "snake oiled" four ways from Sunday. It's definitely a "desktop replacement," only not in a good way - the thing technically IS a desktop - it even carries the very VERY hot 1.13 DESKTOP P3 along with the i815 chipset and a 64-bit version of the GF42Go. As Rainguy says later - this thing LOOKS great, but reading in between the lines finds some very wrong things. If this post hits more than 20 I'm gonna request a lock. Being a systems consultant, I cannot recommend this thing in good graces as a mobile computer. Not just because of the weight, but the heat issues, too. If there was ever a notebook that could cook a steak on its bottom - this one probably is it. Blame my zeal on the fact that it's now 5AM here and I'm tired. 😀

If that link is still a referal link (I wouldn't know), just enter "5005-S507" into the search box. That'll find it. I don't wanna violate any rules.

it's really loaded one. I wish I have the money..

I'm waiting for the mobile Geforce4 vs. Radeon benches. I think the moble Geforce 3D core is supposed to be just like the retail 4MX, which is basically a Geforce2MX, and the Radeon stomps all over the Gf2Go...

that is an excellent price. I have was gonna purchase this notebook last week for $1899, good thing I lagged. Any reviews on this notebook? I heard it is slow on bandwidth hungry games/apps, and it weighs a ton. Besides those drawbacks, it has gotten some good reviews.

Thanks for the heads up DestruyaUR!

Oh - they're not referral links - I assure you. Oh wait. Crap - I'm logged on Amazon. Lemme log out and THEN repost the link.

Sorry this is not the "M" Pentium III. It is the older 256 kb cache and 100 FSB. This runs hotter and drains the battery faster. I did alot of research on this lappy and it is not all that it is cracked up to be. Many people with the 5005 series have complained about randon rebooting issues the Toshiba can't fix. Also many of the reviews written by end user are not wowed by this new graphics card. See all the CNet reviews for more info. I'd pass on this model.

I think you would have to call Amazon and see if you can get one and be able to get the gc. I can't see anywhere you can order it online since it's not instock. You can add it to your wishlist but that won't do any good. This does look like a nice laptop! I'm in the market for a laptop and have been considering the Sony at Sears.com (it's the only Sony laptop they have). It doesn't have the good video card. It does have 30g, 1.13ghz,is a PIII-M,256 memory, dvd/cdrw,and i can't remember what else. It's onsale now for 1599. I think there is a promotion going on and you don't have to make any payments for 3 months using a Sears card. That's what the salesman at Sears said. It may be only if you open up a Sears account, but not for sure. I think i'm gonna have him open me a Sears account, order it online for me and have 3 months to before i start paying on it. I believe there is a $100 rebate on it too. That brings it down to 1599 + tax if you get it from sears. You can order it and pick it up at a Sears store and not have to pay for shipping. I wonder if Amazon.com charges tax? I can't remember if they do or not since i've not shopped there in awhile. Sears has at least a 60 day return policy on computers....i think it can be more (do a search on "sears return policy"in offtopic and see what i posted there). You can play around with the Sony for awhile and then return it if you don't like it for some reason!

I've not finished searching the net for a better price on the Sony (Vaio PCG-GR370), but i've not found a better price than sears yet except for a couple places where it was only a few $ more. And the ease of warranty and returns with sears is a plus for me. Maybe if i can find a much better price and without tax i'd consider getting it from another online company...maybe a pm with Sears will work too...i guess you might have to find one where shipping is free or cheap to make it worthwhile.

Couple of reviews by end users that mean more to me then the magazine reviewers that use it for a day or two:

<< This is not the ultimate portable gaming machine. After about 10-20 minutes, most games will lag badly on this 5005-S507. Even when the laptop is plugged in and the video settings are set to the lowest settings, the Toshiba still lags terribly. In shooting games, you press fire weapon and the weapons fires (after 1 to 2 seconds) and this is on the 680X480 setting!!!! And the hard drive is really, really slow (4400rpm I believe). You should get a Sony or Compaq with the ATI Radeon 16 or 32mb video card. >>

<< "Good on paper, but read between the lines"
In theory, this sounds like a great machine, but make sure you know what you are getting. The cpu in this is a desktop unit, not mobile - BIG difference - 1/2 the cache of a P-IIIM, no SpeedStep (BIOS -controlled throttling instead), burns almost twice as much energy. End result? less than 2 hrs of battery life, compared with 3 - 4 hrs I get with my comparably-equipped S-3000. The moniker "fastest mobile GPU on the planet" is questionable when applied to the GeForce440 Go in this unit, since the chip comes in both 64-bit and 128-bit memory bus configurations, and since Toshiba does not specify which version it is using. My guess would be the (severely limited) 64-bit unit, since Toshiba has already cut corners on the video memory (32 vs. 64) and would probably list the 128-bit bus as a selling feature. Both the Radeon 7500 and the GeForce 440 Go have GPUs that can calculate far more polygons than the rasterizer can paint, even with a 128-bit memory pipe. A 128-bit Radeon will smoke a 64-bit GeForce every time. Unfortunately, the only company offering a comparable gaming laptop at the moment is Dell, and recent user ratings as low as 50%25 (for the 8100) make their products dicey in my book. If you use your PC strictly for gaming and have to have it now, I would get this box before the Dell, but if you can hold off for just a few more months, the Radeon 7500 and GeForce 440 Go should become mainstream enough to make it into higher quality notebooks from IBM's, Compaq's, and Toshiba's own lines. BTW, the Satellite 3000 line is, for my money, a better deal for those who work and play on their notebooks - mobile cpu, 2.5 lbs lighter, twice the battery life, reasonable gaming performance (GF2Go). My only complaints? No 32MB VRAM offering and the idiotic bundling of software as a Norton Ghost image instead of discreetly loadable components.

<< "THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY"
THE GOOD: Incredible audio, featuring a built-in subwoofer , Latest Geforce4-2go graphics card, The newest WinDVD-3.1, Room to spare w/the 40GB/HD. The BAD: 1.13 PIII is not the mobile chip, "NO" 512-L2 cache and no 133mhz front bus. This means "BOTTLE-NECKS" that they could of avoided by using the PIIIm chip. THE UGLY: The graphics card will do less on benchmarking scores due to useing a Desktop PIII with 256-L2 cache and 100 mhz front bus. No choice of upgrading anything, including; The graphics card to 64meg, Hard drive to 48/60GB at 5400 rpm, instead of being stuck with the slooww 4400rpm of the 40GB unit, and finaly RAM!, Tos hiba chose the horrible and cheap intel "815" chipset with a max RAM of 512. What they should of done is used Intels "830" chipset that supports a max RAM of 1024. NO PORTS!, No external key board, No serial and No parallel. My choice of the ultimate notebook is the compac 2700, why? ,They are useing the fantastic "830" 1.2GHZ PIIIm chipset with support forup to 1024RAM,2x512 chips. All compaq needs to do is add the Geforce4-2go to there built to order list and they are the winner. Compac even lets you choose a 48/60-5400rpm GB/HD an d xp-professional.

Rainguy: changed the message topic and first post accordingly telling people to read your comments in particular before going ballistic like I originally did.

cnet opinions for the lazy

honestly, I'm just waiting for them to put the Radeon in an ultra-portable, like the Portege 2000 or the Vaio SRX77. I want that size with a halfway decent 3d card (I don't mind bringing a few extra batteries along)

Thanks DestruyaUR 🙂 I hate to be a party pooper because I really wanted to like this lappy too. The Amazon GC is still a good deal but, I'd go for the Compaq 2715US. Almost nothing else good is in stock 🙁

Guys, when you can get a laptop with lesser but still very good specs, why spend twice as much? Do many of you guys actually use laptops as gaming rigs? I am sitting here typing on the HP 1.06 ghz Celeron, 512 MB, 20 gig, 14.1 TFT, DVD that I got a couple weeks ago from the Staples deal, and I paid $922 after rebate and tax. Is it really worth another $800 OR $1000 dollars to get a laptop like the one mentioned in this thread? For the record, a lot of the "cheaper" laptops can get similar specs by paying a few bucks for upgrades. e.g. If I would have bought the HP laptop with CDRW, a 40GB hdd, and a 1.1 ghz Celeron, it would have been $1237. Don't these laptop prices seem really inflated for the performance gain you get out of them?

Looked at one in a compusa, the screen is amazing

Anyone have hard figures on battery run time? or are people just poo pooing it from the non mobile chip spec?

It would also be good to know if the video is on it's own card like the dells to allow for upgrades
