ONE EXTREMELY UNHAPPY CAMPER!!!

Well... I decided to bring the new stats server into work this afternoon and let it run here in the place of the old server. It shut down properly and everything seemed fine, but for some reason unknown to me, between my kitchen table and a spare cubicle here at work, something has fvcked up... the new server won't boot completely into Windows... everything spins up fine, the vidcard BIOS announces itself, it POSTS, and the RAID array initializes... when the boot process gets that far... sometimes it restarts while still in the BIOS... sometimes it will get to the Win2K splash-screen before rebooting... once or twice it got to the Applying Security Policies screen before rebooting... the common theme here is that it won't make it into Windows and it doesn't seem to be a Windows problem, which has got me very concerned.

I tried replacing the memory... no change.
Made sure everything was seated properly... no change.
Made sure the cables were secure... no change.
Changed the power cable... no change.

Dunno what to do next! I don't see any obvious issues with the motherboard (no blown caps) and the power connectors are securely attached.

I'm at a complete loss. I didn't hit any potholes on the way over... didn't drop the machine into any deep puddles... it's not raining and is didn't get hit by lightning on the way over... I just don't get it.

I would reseat the heatsink.

I would also check the PSU and make sure it's correct. As in 115/(what ever the other one is. 😉 )

With it restarting in the BIOS it has to be a motherboard/power/heat issue. How many SCSI drives are you running? You may want to run the drives on a different PSU.

Also, have you tried a different power outlet? Maybe put a UPS on it, or if it is on a UPS remove it.

Unplug power cable from MB, remove heat sinks and fans , remove cpu's and apply fresh thermal grease to cpu's and replace heat sinks and fans ,remove all cards and ram chips and reseat them . If tit still doesn't work check all your cables.

I know how you feel, I remove a working HD from one system to used in another system and it quit working in that 5 minutes time.

Hey I just got done repairing a friends PC a few minutes ago with basicly the same symptoms. Bad power supply, (Antec true 380) the 12 volt rail wasn't quite putting out enough. If you have a spare PSU you might try swaping it out and see.

If it is a TYan board keep rebooting it will fire up eventually. I have a trade offer on the table for Shame , someone give him a kick please.

Thanks guys... I had to just get away from it for a while. The mobo is an Asus... can't remember the model.. it was sold to me by Baldy, so he would probably remember.

One thing I did notice in the bios was the VCore on the two processors was not the same... one was 1.76 and the other was 1.71 (I think)... but is was running fine for 5 days! :| So you may be right about the power issue... The configuration is no different from day one and I've done tons of reboots (through the Windows updates, software installation, etc) and I didn't once have this problem.

In any event... I'll look for a different PSU on Tuesday... I just left it at work... playtime is over since the wife returns tonight and there's no way I could get away with the rackmount server on the kitchen table with 25 ft of cat5 strung through the living room into the kitchen while she's here... go figure!

That board has voltage ajustment for Vore, but it only affects CPU1. Kinda stupid. I had one, worked good.

You said it right there, the difference is the power at your house Vs at work. Power at the job probably lower resulting in the Power Supply That was probably borderline to begin with to not have enough.

Geoff,

It does seem like a power issue. I would try another power supply (I've had a £65 Enermax 350W PSU die on me) and see what happens.

YGPM, also 🙂

Troubleshooting... 🙂 Post complete specs, and I'll wade into it and see what I can do, although I may have to get back to it in about 12 hours when I'm back from work. Initial couple of suggestions:

1) The A7M266-D uses the flat 6-blade Legacy connector and the four-pin ATX12V plug for supplemental power. The 6-blade one can pull loose, so confirm that it's firmly seated.

2) Try a different surge supressor, if it isn't using the one that was working before.. I had a system at work that mimicked the symptoms of general HDD failure. Drag it to my office, replace hard drive, get it set up, take it to its own office, plug it in... same symptoms! 😛 The surge supressor had evidently taken a hit during a heater installation by electricians the previous night (my theory) and it would power lights and clocks, but computers...? Believe it! 😛

3) As long as I'm skimming through the A7M266-D's manual, let me add that PCI slots 4 & 5 don't share their IRQ's with any other PCI slots or devices, so they're good homes for high-bandwidth cards like disk controllers.

4) Remember the big picture: it's nothing that can't be fixed with a mobo replacement (and possibly RAM if you have R-ECC modules). Smack an Asus A7N8X in there with one processor and off she goes 🙂

5) If the power supply is not a high-quality unit like an Antec or Enermax 400W+ unit, we need to get you something of that caliber.
