i have a 1ghz duron running on a gigabyte ga-7dx (oem from micron) with 512mb pc1600. i've had it like that for about two months (always had the parts, but just recently pieced them together). a few days ago, i booted the rig and it posted at 800mhz (8 x 100mhz reported during post and also by wcpuid). somehow, the multiplier dipped down from 10 to 8. this motherboard does not have jumpers or a dip switch to change the multiplier. i took off the heatsink fan and checked out & cleaned off the cpu, just in case it was dirty or some AS was oozing orr the core and onto the bridges. put everything back together and it's still posting at 800mhz. the 200mhz loss isn't horrendous, but i am just really curious as to what the heck happened. anyone have any ideas?

wow that is interesting, the only thing that i know that would cause that is jumper on the board, wich you DO not have.
Is everything looking ok in the bios? do you have another chip you could try to see if that regesters correctly?

yeah i have an actual 750mhz duron which i am too lazy to pop in right now. but the bios looks fine. maybe i should take the hsf off... wash out my eyes... and then stick that 1ghz duron in another mobo.

alright, now this is wierd. today, i booted the rig up and it posts at 1ghz again.

<--- 😕 but not complaining 😎

hmm, time to try a new cpu in that thing

I am sure you have thought of this, but if it were my problem and I were troubleshooting, I would immediately suspect I had a slight bit of conductive material between a couple (or more) of the bridges. It doesn't take much as evidenced by the fact people were bridging with just the graphite from a pencil. That is the only thing that makes any sense -- the CPU is "seeing" settings calling for 10x some times and 8x sometimes. If you have some trichlor or even alcohol clean the bridge area very gently with a dampened Q-tip. I would expect the problem to clear up if you do.
