Recently I saw my Task manager window and was surprised to see that there were only 3 cores ! To make it sure I installed CPU-Z and even that showed I had core2Quad Q6600 with 3 cores , I dont know what to do and have never even tried to change my BIOS settings. I have posted a CPU-z Image showing my cpu results.

If anyone knows how to bring my missing core back than please help me :(

Shut down, pull power cord for 1 min then start back up.
You may need to reset your CMOS if that fails.

Try the newest version of CPU-Z. Or try this
Try entering "msconfig" in start menu.
Goto "boot" --> "Advanced Options
Tick "Number of Processors"
Select "4"
Reboot.

I have the Q6600, the box for me is unchecked, you can also try that.

Did you just install windows/build the PC?

I just opened msconfig box , where in the "no. of processor" box there is number upto 3 only, so I think its more like a hardware problem than a OS one

Shut down and remove the battery from the holder on the board. It's the shiny round thing about the size of a nickel. It will have a small clip to release it. Leave it out for about a minute.

You will need to go into your BIOS and set your date/time, boot order, and overclocking settings (if used) from scratch.

Has anyone come up with a bad core on these chips?? I've never seen someone not able to locate a core.

had this same problem with my Quad Q6600 after a while. Mine is worst because only 1 core is showing. I call Intel Tech support. It told me that the problem is the mobo, whis is the P5K-V ASUS. So I called Asus and explained the problem. The asked me to ship it back for repair. I did. then it was shipped back to me. I reinstalled the quad cpu. Again the problem was the same . I called ASSUS and tell them that the problem is still the same. so they ask me to ship it back. I ship it back. Mean while I bought a new mobo, ASUS P5Q-EM. I re installed my Quad Q6600. Every thing works fine. All 4 cores are running now.
Your problem is the motherboard. Replace it.

I had a same problem except mine showed 2 out of 4 cores.
I think I fixed the problem by clearing CMOS.

Hi!
I had a case like that few weeks ago with Q6600. It turned out that client has turned OFF one core in the bios. IF you are not familiar with BIOS options on your motherboard, take advice of previous posters and just reset the CMOS battery (unplug the power cord as well). Took me an hour to figure it out...LoL..

the fact that you're working with an intel board really helps. if you emailed their support and told them you were using an MSI board, for instance, they would've told you to change the board. Tell them it's their DG31 and let us know what they say.

Isse fixed yet?
While this thread is getting some attention. Users of the Q6600, how do you like it for gaming performance? Any benchmarks of new or old games on the thing at various speeds?, stock, 3ghz, 3.4...

Attic,

I've been running on a Q6600 C0 stepping for almost three years now. It's the best proc I think I've ever owned. I run a mild overclock (3ghz) with a scythe cooler and couldn't be happier with perf in games and every kind of app. Don't have benchies but I'm sure at prolly has some laying about.

I'd go as far to say the Q6600 is the best cpu I've owned for the price/performance....and I've owned a lot of cpus.

Still runs games easily at 3.2.

Since I'm mostly a gamer I see no reason to upgrade at all this year.
