One core is 10-12 C cooler then other core on E8400

I just installed my thermalright bolt-thru kit using my vendetta original and AS 5 paste. I was using the pushpins and NO paste before this. Suddenly I have a drop of 10-12 C on one core at idle. This is less than an hour after installation, so I'm sure there will be some burn in. The paste job seemed good(not too much). Running orthos, the cores were about 3-4 degrees apart, which is on par with before the new mods.

Is this typical?

You were running your cpu without any paste? Of course that would explain the 10-12c drop =P

Did you lap that finally btw??

I have always believed that what you need to worry about is the spread in temps when running at full, not idle. I would say that 8-10 is still high even for idle... unless you have some mad stuff running in the background just at boot up (do you have it set to degrag at start, do full stupid virus scan??).

Anyhow good to hear you got that type of drop in temps!

I don't understand the huge difference in temps w/the cores, but I'm with Xed on the whole running w/o paste thing. Did you apply the paste properly? Just a line down the middle using the arrow-side on the processor as the reference 'bottom' is what is usually recommended (and what I see the best results with).

You were... running... with... no paste. I think I comprehend that. Or your base is screwed up and you might not have screwed something in all the way.

Yup, I'm running with very little paste, after lapping, and got a similar spread, very bizarre. My first reaction is to both reapply TIM, and mark the TRUE to make sure it goes in the other way this time, see if the high core moves. This is something wrong, not something to live with.
