Hey all, just wanting to get some suggestions as to the problem my Uncle is experienceing. Normally I would just call him on the phone and walk him through it.. but he runs winME (which I have NEVER even wanted to try). I am guessing most of the operations are the same as 98 with a mix of 2000 thrown in for good measure. I am suspecting the culprit to be the autodial option being enabled in the Internet settings. But I'm not sure what prog is trying to access the internet. At first I thought it was Win update, but then remembered it doesn't try to call if not inet connection is there. Anyway here is his lovely very descripive email below. I am thinking that deleting all of his dial-up network connections and disabling the "autodial" option in Inet Settings would solve this random dialing. however, it would not stop whatever task is being run every "few minutes". Thanks for the suggestions!!

Without my asking, and whatever I do with my computer--even when I first turn it on--a page pops up telling me it is going to provide a revision to my Windows, then it dials, without my askinlg, a number which I don't have (I no longer have Juno Web), and I then must cancel it. It pops up every few minutes and begins to dial. I don't know how to shut it off.

Umm.. get adaware or tell your uncle to stop running freesex.exe files or whatever they are 😀

Other than that.. May be auto update by windows, but I've never known it to be that persistent. You can maybe disable it in control-system- and something in there, but I haven't used ME in a long time so I don't know.

Have him remove all DUN connections and uninstall the Juno crap. Re-set the DUN connection he uses and let Windows ME get the updates it's looking for.

For this kind of situation.. Win98 would be exactly the same for WinMe.

Go into internet options, connections and set to never dial a connection.

Then go into msconfig and disable all startups except scanregistry, systray & statemgr. Restart.

His problem will be solved assuming its not a virus.
