Onboard vs. PCI sound

I am going to be upgrading my motherboard to a Soltek K8TPro-939. I have wondered this for awhile, but have not really bothered with it. I have always used onboard sound, and I was wondering whether using a PCI soundcard as opposed to onboard sound would yield performance gains?

depends on which card you get... but yes... PCI audio will be better... better signal to noise ratio. Maybe more features.

I'm not talking about sound performance, I mean computer performance. Basically, does using PCI audio offload the CPU enough to give better gaming performance?
