onboard sound

can someone explain to me everything i need to know about onboard sound? all that stuff about codecs and how optical output bypasses it or something. (specifically on the via 8237 chip)

Hehe, not too demanding or anything right? The 8237 is one of VIA's better south bridges. Check out the quick rundown near the end here:

A lot of people are fantatical about the Envy 7.1 controller. A lot of people will not find it that impressive though. I dont know which category you fit under.
