Onboard sound vs. Santa Cruz for headphones

I'm currently using the onboard sound on my ABIT IS7-E, and just received a pair of Sennheiser HD497's in the mail yesterday. While the headphones sound great hooked up to my dad's receiver, and pretty good on my mini-stereo system, there is a ton of buzzing when I try to plug them into my onboard sound, even with the volume turned all the way down! In a nutshell, the headphones are currently unusable on my PC due to all the loud hissing, buzzing, and lack of clarity.

How would moving up to a TBSC or maybe even an Audigy 2 affect the sound quality of the headphones? I know the phones perform best when hooked up to an amplified hi-fi system, but I'm hoping a higher-end sound card would eliminate all the nasty noise that is coming through. Any responses from those with experience with using headphones on these cards would be greatly appreciated!

My cheapo budphones work well with my Santa Cruz (and before that, my nForce APU, which I had to disable because my cheesy digital speakers didn't like the SPDIF out). The sound is clear, and the enviro effects are fun!

Yeah, there are lots of enviro effects on my AC97 control panel to choose from, but they make the sound even crappier when I have the headphones plugged in. I would definitely be willing to spend $50 on a TBSC if I knew it would provide clear and crisp sound (comparable to hi-fi system) for my new headphones.
