onboard sound volume problem

i can't seem to control the volume with the computer. i have to manually adjust it from the speakers. i did install the onboard sound drivers. did i install the wrong one? this never happened to me before. any help appreciated.

If you double click the speaker icon in the taskbar and adjust the volume bars there does the audio volume change?

Or, if there is no icon there what if you go to control panel -> sounds and audio devices -> advanced button (this should bring up the same volume controls I was mentioning above.

samething. it shows on my screen the volume meter going up and down but it sounds the same.
