Onboard sound quality vs. a normal sound card's quality?

I'm planning to build a new machine soon and I'm thinking about getting the Giga Byte GA-7VRXP Motherboard which comes with on-board sound. Before making my purchase I want to know if I'd be able to tell the difference between the on-board sound and a decent sound card like a Turtle Beach Santa Cruz. I listen to mp3s all the time and play games a lot, so sound is pretty important to me. But I'd rather not shell out 60 more dollars if I'm not going to be able to tell the difference. Thanks in advanced.

Use the search function. There was a thread just last week here with dozens of posts on that exact same subject. No need to beat a dead horse again! :)

Crap, I did a search before I posted this but couldn't find anything. Do you remember the title of the thread?

Try searching for 'onboard'. I'm pretty sure that was in the title of some of the threads.

FWIW

I play a lot of games with sound output to a stereo reciever using some decent (Bose) desktop speakers.
I do not consider myself an audiophile in any way, shape or form.

I can't tell the difference between the onboard (creative, same board you're considering) and my SB Live!.
