Onboard sound problems.

I'm not sure I've setup the onboard sound for this motherboard up correctly. Ever since i've upgraded to the Gigabyte GA-965P-DS3 motherboard, my speaker quality has gone down and my mic people are saying isn't clear.

My previous computer used onboard sound too. It was an ABit board though. Any ideas to help set it up? Or maybe better drivers other than the ones it shipped with? I really don't like the idea of having to buy a sound card for this machine when the onboard sound should be good enough.

Any suggestions? Thanks.
 
You don't say which Abit board (or the onboard sound), but there's a good probability it's a VIA...your current board has a RealTek. You could try newer drivers, if available.

However, onboard audio is usually hit-n-miss. My SoundMax on an Asus board was disabled in favor of an Audigy because the SoundMax didn't work with MCE. There was also a somewhat notable increase in quality, which is highly common regardless of which onboard sound you have.

You could scrounge up an old Live! card for $5 somewhere...that should give you a significant increase in quality.
 
It really depends on the quality of the equipment connected.

There's little sense in spending $100 on a sound card to power a $25 set of speakers.
 
Pretty much. It is cheapy speakers and a cheapy mic but the sound quality is a significant downgrade from what I had prior. I dont recall the Abit board model or the onboard sound it used.

I did check on drivers though. they are upgraded fully.
 
yea, I'm using that one too and it doesn't work with my mic to well. It has a massive "feedback" problem when I talk over someone else. The speakers also feem a bit "grainy".
 
hmm, I'm not having any issues with the drivers. I think the sound is equal to the sound I had with my previous motherboard which was an Asus P5WD2-E Premium.
 
Alright, I solved the feedback problem. I muted all the recording things other than the mic which fixed that problem. Now when I talk people on ventrlo say I sound like I'm speaking in the bathroom with the door shut. So I guess I have some kind of odd echoing effect.

any idea for what could cause that?
 
I don't use mics very often and I have yet to try one with this board. I did notice in the drivers under the microphone tab, there is something called "acoustic echo cancellation". What is that all about?
 
I have no idea what it does. I dont have much background noise in my room to notice much difference. But I'd tried it with them on and off.
