Onboard Sound Problem

I just built a computer for my friend using a FIC AZ11EA KT133A motherboard and a Duron 750. It works great so far, except for the onboard sound. He doesn't want to buy a soundcard (as you can see he's interested in saving money) but the onboard sound (AC 97 I think) doesn't seem to work. It's turned on in the BIOS and it's set up in Windows 2000 SP2. Sound recording works, but sound playback doesn't. As far as I can see, the sound is configured correctly in Windows and I know my headphones I'm using to test it work. Any ideas about what the problem could be? I've never used the onboard sound, so I don't really have any idea. Thanks.
