Is the onboard sound on an Asus A7V133 comparable to the Cretive Ensoniq AudioPCI? Or maybe the Vortex 1? How good is it?

No, its software.. AC97. Its decent for MP3s or such, but for games and stuff it doesnt do extremely well.

It's prolly cause you got one that was no audio :). The A7v and her big brother both come in an audio and no-audio flavor.

I can't give you a direct comparison because I haven't used either of the two sound cards you mentioned.

I can tell you that I'm very pleased with it. It has more gain (higher volume) than any PCI card I have ever used. Particularly nice when playing DVD's into my Boston Acoustics Surrond Sound system.

My friend uses the onboard sound of the A7V133 and he LOVES it. He's very happy that he saved $50+ on a soundcard and spend $5-10 for the onboard sound version. Plus, it saves a PCI slot. Good move for the value-seekers.
