Onboard Sound not installed

Hi,

I just bought a new PC and installed Windows XP on it.

However, my onboard sound hasn't been installed and I can't hear any audio from my pc. My motherboard cd tells me to install sp1 before it can install the audio drivers for it.

Now, how do I download sp1 or sp2? The windows site only tells me to run autoupdate ... I've done that selected express install and then custom install. But nothing yet ...

Any idea how to enable the sound? Thanks in advance for your help.

This is the error I get, when I play a file in WIndows Media Player :

"No audio is available, or the hardware is not responding"

If you just bought the machine, it probably came with SP2. If so, that implies that everything before SP2 was included in the original installation.

Try running the installation program from the CD. If it doesn't work, go to the motherboard maker's website, and look for a BIOS update. They may even list the issues their updates address.

To see which Windows updates you already have, click Help / About in the Start menu. Whether or not you already have SP1 or SP2, you should still check back the Windows Update site regularly (now, for example) for other available updates.

Hope that helps. 🙂

Yes, it does the windows update.

But it only downloads security fixes and the like. It doesn't install SP2.

Is there any place from where I can obtain sp2 in its totality?

The reason you're only getting security fixes is because you need to first patch SP1 before it will let you download SP2. Just wait and make sure automatic updates is on. It will come.

Well, chances are your on-board audio is realtek AC97. You can probably see the a chip near the PCI slots w/ the little crab on top. This is the on-board audio chip. Look at the number on the chip to find out the exact model of your realtek, and go over to realtek.com and d/l the driver for that model and install it.
