Onboard Network chip not recognized....help?

I have an Intel D845PEBT2 MoBo which has an onboard LAN chip. For some reason, anytime I try to connect my Motorola Surfboard (cable) modem up to it, it won't work -- the modem doesn't recognize the network. I've done the simple stuff, like enabling the LAN in BIOS, loading the most recent drivers from Intel for the LAN setup, even bought a new CAT5 cable, but still no go (I'm running Win XP Pro by the way). The Motorola works fine when hooked up via USB (it has connections for both network and USB), but a plain no-go with the on-board LAN stuff. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

Are you using a crossover or a straight through cable? Typically, when running a cable between two devices directly, you need a crossover cable. Standard Cat5 cables are designed to go from a device to a hub or switch. If you don't get a link light, you probably need a different type of cable.

I was using a straight-through cable (and got link lights on both the modem and the MoBo connector). I tried a crossover cable last night (borrowed one from work), and still no go. Get link lights on both ends with it too, but the network is still not being recognized. Thanks for your help (really!), but I'm still not working. Any other ideas?
