Does using the onboard Nforce Gigabit LAN on my motherboard
(9npa+Ultra) decrease performance, in 3D specifically???

reason why is there isn't enough room for the PCI sound card
and my old trusty PCI LAN card

any info or links appreciated!

Actually it will increase overall system performance since the chip is not connected to the PCI bus and hence does not interfere with other PCI transfers, when gaming namely the sound.

Not only this, but the Gigalan is also very feature rich, and allows for many tweaks for games that are fussy with net connections like World of Warcraft. The Gigabit Lan seems to be the fastest lan I have ever used to be quite honest.

Use the gigabit lan!!
Its so much more efficient than using a pci card lan!!

It'll be fine, but not as fast as chipset integrated Gigabit (Intel CSA, nForce LAN) or a PCI Express gigabit solution.

Not necessarily - if it's not a southbridge internal or PCIE gigabit MAC, then it _is_ on the same slow PCI bus as your slots are. NF4 does have internal GbE MAC and just requires a discrete PHYsical interface chip. If there's any 2nd ethernet channel on the board, you need to check whether it's on PCI or PCIE.
