onboard audio ... good/bad?

hey besides the audio quality.. will onboard audio cards affect anything else? IE: performance of games, system...

i have an AOPEN AX64 onboard audio .

 
it uses more CPU power, so yes it does affect gaming etc. but depending on you board and cpu, it may not be by much
 
If it's an actual Sound chip, like a creative or yamaha, it wouldn't be too bad.

If it is the onboard audio codecs via AC'97, run, don't walk to get yourself a real sound card, AC'97 SUCKS ARSE.
