Onboard ATI Video to X800XL - Reinstall Drivers?

Hey all, I just installed an X800XL in a new ATI-Based MSI motherboard. Prior to the X800, I was utilizing the onboard Radeon graphics and had the latest Catalyst 5.2 drivers installed. After installing the X800XL and running 3DMark2K1, my scores seem quite low at 20,000. WinXP SP2 was installed fresh last week when the system was originally built, all settings are stock, no overclocking.

The rig is as follows:

MSI RS480M2-IL
A64-3000+ 939
ATI X800XL
2x512 ADATA Vietsa PC4200
1xMaxtor 250GB ATA-133 16MB
WinXP SP2

Any ideas on the slow performance?

20,000 isn't that low FYI. Yes, you should reinstall drivers after any kind of significant upgrade, especially graphics. That was a big jump you took, and even though it should work, it is easier to reinstall drivers now than deal with the headache down the road.

Instead of "playing" 3dMark why dont you play games and see if they run better. Theres a novel idea

It doesn't matter what 3dMark says if your games are doing just fine. Also You are running 3dMark2k1 which is CPU limited; it doesn't even use DX9. If you want to see a bigger improvement you run 2k3 or 2k5.

Edit:

You know, the advice would have been better received without the first comment. I actually don't use the rig for gaming, I was testing out the card for a friend who purchased it and is waiting for the rest of his parts to arrive. So, instead of a nice new $300 video card sitting on the shelf for a few days, we plugged it into the only PCI-E equipped computer we had.

I will go and run 3DM2K5 and post some results.

Hey, if you get a chance to run it both with and with the X800 XL, I'd be interested in seeing it. Does the X800 XL have a temp probe? I'm building a similar rig myself.

Killrose is probably right about the chipset drivers also.

they probably dont. it is only built in the card cores with a xt model(and even then, it;s disabled in all but the xt. the .the new 11micron core dosent have a xt modelin thre lineup and probably wont have one ever since there is already a x800xt.

Re-install the gart drivers for the chipset.

Fixed. Not going to be AGP 🙂

So why dont you tell us that. Instead of making us guess what this sytem is for or why you are benchmarking it tell us. I apologize for my kind of harsh comment however take the advice. Instead of going and running yet another 3dMark run a game! Yes, 3dMark gives a good idea of how it should run however, with all the optimizations and what not the results can become skewed.

use a temp probe. there are a variety of case temp monitors ofr sale now and pretty chep too. just connect one of the probes to the gpu to check the temps.

Yup, thats a good idea actually. I do like being able to check my card's temp after using that feature on my 6800. I do wish ATI would stick them on more of their GPU's.

K guys, ran 3DM2K3 and had scores comparible to others' with my setup. Got 10,100 stock and 10,600 with the card at 425/515. Thanks 🙂
