On what side do you err when there is an ambiguous sneeze?

Eh?

  • I err on the side of the individual sneezing

  • I err on the side of the individual coughing

  • I never say "Bless you" unless she doesn't have pointy elbows

Assuming that you are someone that ordinarily gives a customary "Bless you" to an individual that sneezes, what do you do when someone gives something that sounds kind of like both a sneeze and a cough. Maybe they do the pre-sneeze inhale perfectly but it comes out throaty and rough. Or maybe it sounds sufficiently wet, but is still too low pitched. Would you risk saying "Bless you" if you thought they had just coughed?

what is the risk
what happens if it is done wrong

If you say "Bless you" to a cute girl who actually coughed, it will make you look like a suck-up and a creep who is only doing it out of desperation to be liked by her. If you don't say it, you look like an inconsiderate ass.

I don't say "Bless you" so I don't have to worry about it. If people think that's rude, fuck em.

Put your hand on her shoulder, arrest her eyes with a look of concern, and say in a comforting voice "That was DISGUSTING." Give her an entire roll of paper towels with other hand. Walk away, don't turn around if she laughs, get shiny-eyed looks from her evermore if you have any semblance of comic timing.

Also don't participate. Saying bless you to people you don't know (especially to a girl) is already weird, imo.
