On "today" page, I can only see 6 recent posts

And this is even thought the heading says "Last 20 posts". The last time I tried that quite a few months ago I think there were 20.

OK, I'll take a guess, since I've been posting and am up to 8 or so now. It must really be last 20 posts or last posts within x days, where x is 30 or 60 or 90 or something.

Most likely it only shows replies to active threads and not archived threads. So any post that is 45 days or so old will disappear from the list.
