On the issue of arctic drilling

Sorry, but i feel the need to rant for a moment regarding an idea which some have posted here, that we should preserve the 'natural beauty of the refuge for our children.'

Where drilling would happen in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge is not 'a cathedral of nature.' It's barren tundra, utter and absolute desolation. In earlier days, we would have called it 'wasteland.' There is nothing there that you would even want to take a picture of. If you could go anywhere in the world, this is the last place you'd want to go. If you ended up in the Alaska National Wildlife Refuge, the first thing you'd want is out. Neither you, nor your children, are going to be going to visit ANWAR anytime soon, much less moving there. That being said, i think that it's fair to make the argument that we should not develop the area, for various reasons, but please do so with the recognition that this isn't beachfront Hawaiian property we're talking about.

Okay, rant over, we will now return to our regularly scheduled flamefest on the subject...
 
Yeah, but they are going to dig a HOLE in the ground, this should only be done in the Middle East where there is plenty of sand around to fill the hole back up.
 
Glenn1 - flamefest? Is that what you were aiming for w/ this rant? no, no, no, I'd like to be the first to say that I definitely agree with what you have just said on the topic. 🙂

Not only is the area desolate, but it serves as the perfect place to perserve what we need in the future (which in this case would be the preservation of the oil) - well guess what, the future is now, and it is time for us to put this "desolation" to good use 🙂

We can't keep saying that we shouldn't drill... we shouldn't drill... because we can say that 100 years from now and it won't do us any good!

We can only perserve something for so long, then we have to have to exploit it for our own good... (not to say that we should go on to chop all the tropical forests down, but y'understand 🙂) - it's obvious as you stated, the area has nothing that is really special or that is going to be missed... it's something that we can exploit w/o having to destroy any natural habitat that is present

Time to take action... 😀

Ditto, Ditto, Ditto. I said this same thing in another topic, the ANWR that plans to be drilled is nothing but barren frozen dirt. Its not the pristine mountains, 50 foot pines, bears and caribou in every corner, that the media likes to show you. 33 Square miles of dirt and ice planned for drilling.
