Holy wow, that's a lot of earmark $$$. I'm sure that will raise some eyebrows with the "fiscal conservatives" at the tea parties here in the NOLA suburbs. Yep, I'm sure there will be clever signs with "Caommunism" and pictures of him dressed as Che Guevara at the next "non partisan" protest in front of the mall.

You know that in the article...it states "While all members who submit requests end up getting some earmarks granted, Cao's request is more in the realm of a wish list."

He is not going to get $1.2 billion, not even close...probably 1 to 2% of that amount at best.

You want to talk about porks..how about R. Byrd of W.Virginia?

Personally, that's why I abandon the GOP years ago. They are to fiscal responsibility what drunks are to sobriety. Of course, you really can't blame the Congressman, or any congress member, for porking it up, because that's what the constituients demand. Pork is only what goes on in other people's districts; in our district, it's not pork - it's "vital investment in critical infastructure"! Voters love to talk about fiscal discipline, but most really aren't willing to vote for it.

Looks bad but may of the projects are legitimate infrastructure upgrades. I could only wish the recent stimulus package had that high a % of infrastructure spending.

That said doubt he gets anywhere near what he is requesting.

"Ellis said that Republicans, as the minority party, get 40 percent of the earmark money, and that in the last go-round, they, like Democrats, directed it to help their most vulnerable members." And where's the outrage for where the other 60% is going? Or how Dems have done exactly the same thing in the past?

I agree on both counts. And, I'd like to see LA get every penny. While I'm dreaming, I'd also like to see that money NOT stolen by our crooked politicians and the money for the USACOE come with restrictions requiring external oversight by outside experts.

Who's supposed to be outraged now? I lost track.

Over the last 3 fiscal years total earmark funding has been reduced more that 50%. As long as that trend continues the Honorable Anh "Joseph" Cao can request $50 billion for local projects if he wants ...

The best way to fix this is to appropriate $10 million for each House member and $50 million for each Senator to spend in their states/district anyway they want. Let the state/locals fight over the distribution with their individual elected officials.
